SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
Echinoidea, commonly known as sea urchins, are a class of echinoderms whose common ancestor appeared in the fossil records in the Permian era and today includes around 1000 known extant species. They are marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata and the class Echinoidea. They have a hard shell covered with small knobs to which spines are attached in living echinoids. The hard shell and spines are the parts normally found as fossils.
