Perilla (Perilla Frutescens) is an Asian edible herb found either as cultivated (Perilla Frutescens) or wild in the wild, belonging to the Lamiaceae family of mint, with a strong aroma and taste, with hints of liquorice or star anise. Other common names include 'perilla mint', 'Chinese basil' and 'wild basil'. The names 'wild coleus', or 'summer coleus' probably refer to ornamental varieties. The red types of shiso (or su tzu) are called purple mint, or purple mint plant. The leaves as well as its oil are also used as medicine. It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs of traditional Chinese medicine as it is used for common colds as well as other stomach and lung problems. Perilla leaves can be used in case of colds, fever, headaches, nasal congestion with cough and chest discomfort. It can also be used in case of diarrhea due to consumption of fish or crab. Compared to other vegetable oils, perilla oil has one of the highest percentages of omega-3 fatty acids, which is between 54-64%. The omega-6 fatty acid component is usually around 14%. This unusual omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is considered beneficial to human health and useful in preventing various diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, cancer, inflammatory and rheumatoid arthritis.
